The most spectacular lumenous phenomenon in our atmosphere is the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights that also exist at the South Pole but are termed Aurora Australis. The sun winds – a storm of electrons from the hydrogen explosions that occur on the sufrace of the sun – are attracted by the magnetic fields of our Earth’s atmosphere where they collide with the air we breath. These magical, etherial light formations are a product of such collisions.
In the close vicinity of storm clouds, as here over the Indian Ocean, static electricity discharges on the airplane. Especially impressive is the lightning flashing over the windscreen. The term St. Elmo’s Fire goes back to Erasmus, the patron saint of sailors. This luminous effect can also be seen on the top of sailing boat masts and on crosses placed on a mountaintop.
