In the close vicinity of storm clouds, as here over the Indian Ocean, static electricity discharges on the airplane. Especially impressive is the lightning flashing over the windscreen. The term St. Elmo’s Fire goes back to Erasmus, the patron saint of sailors. This luminous effect can also be seen on top of sailing boat masts and on crosses placed on a mountaintop.
